What goes in must come out

As a first-time mom, it’s amazing to think how much time you can spend talking about not only what goes into your child’s mouth, but what happens at the other end. From the very first days when the hospital sent us home with a sheet on which to record feedings and wet and soiled diapers, I find myself checking out what’s in the diaper as one more clue about health and wellness.
Of course, any discussion about diaper “doody” invariably leads to tales of blow-outs in all their icky glory. Thankfully we hadn’t had one of these in a while, but that streak ended last weekend when we tried prunes for the first time. To JD’s credit, he really enjoyed them; gobbling down the whole container with a smile. That smile was back a short time later, accompanied by a few grunts indicating it was time for a bathroom break.
However, I wasn’t smiling when, after catching a whiff of the stinky, I found a blow-out to end all blow-outs. We quickly retreated to the bathroom to try & clean up the mess. Saturday is bath day so after ascertaining that this event couldn’t be contained, I stripped the little guy down to the surprisingly unsoiled diaper (still can’t figure that one out), performed a hasty triage, ran the bath & plopped him in, grumbling to myself the entire time that that was the end of the prunes.
It wasn’t until later when I was giving JD the antibiotic for his ear infection that I noticed the small print on the bottle warning that it could cause diarhea. So the prunes were probably not completely to blame and will get another shot at the high chair. I also came across some suggestions by other mothers that they alternate prunes with bananas since the laxative effect of the prunes counteracts the tendency of the bananas to cause constipation.

Cool post.
On the subject of poop: antibiotics mess with the gut flora in the digestive tract causing an imbalance, that’s true. If you’re giving your son an antibiotic you might want to include probiotics (yogurt, etc) in his food after the treatment course to re-establish a balance.
Hope the little guy feels better.
I’m very relieved to hear that the picture is of prunes. :-0
