I can do it myself

JD was perfectly content to have me do all the heavy lifting at meal time until the past week or so. At first I efficiently dodged his attempts to grab for the spoon, but then I had a flashforward vision of some future dinner where I was still feeding him and I decided now is as good a time as any to let him begin learning to feed himself.
Of course, this means that meal time has gotten a lot messier since his will is a lot more developed than his ability to actually get the spoon into his mouth. For now, I’m trying to at least keep a guiding hand in the game, until the utensil gets into his mouth. After that, he’s welcome to hang on & move it around until he gets every last drop while I load up the second spoon. Invariably, half of the cereal dribbles out as each bite is punctuated with a high-pitched squeal of delight.
Feeding frustration isn’t limited to the high chair either. Apparently I’m not moving fast enough when it comes to getting the bottle ready because he’s taken to snatching it out of my hands after excitedly bouncing up & down a few times. And so we’ve had our few lessons in manners as well as we try to curb the grabbiness.
