Take small bites…

So my daughter likes to feed herself. There’s only one problem—she doesn’t like to take bites. She chews wonderfully, but I’ll give her a banana or a piece of bread, for example, and rather than take a small bite of it, she’ll shove the whole thing in her mouth. I think it’s hereditary, because both her mom and dad are big-bite eaters.
You’re probably thinking, why not give her small pieces. Doesn’t work. I’ll have a banana in my left hand and some of it in my right to give to her and no she wants the larger piece. I usually win the ensuing battle but it doesn’t make for a pleasant meal.
I have tried to teach her how to take little bites, but I’m not winning her over. I’ve also gone in there to take said large bite and she finds it’s a game and starts laughing, which freaks me out even more.
I find myself bracing myself (and saying a little prayer) every time I let her feed herself…which isn’t good for me or her. But I guess, like everything else, we’ll get there (one bite) at a time.

When you figure this one out, let me know! Our 20-month-old eats like she was raised by a pack of wolves. (My fault, I guess!)
Since our little guy has no back teeth (he’s 16 months), we still cut everything up for him into tiny pieces. Our problem is he wants to feed himself now, which makes for lots of chopping. We have found that we can get him to eat an entire bowl of cereal—a great meal for a child who can’t chew—but only if we give him his own spoon. It’s messy, but effective until those molars come in.
This reminded me of when our 9 year old was a toddler, we assumed he was chewing his food, till he threw up one day in the parking lot of a grocery store, and what came up was whole peices of UNchewed macaroni and cheese. We were shocked that we never knew that stuff just slid down his throat with out any chewing taking place. Sorry, that was probably super gross to imagine!
sometimes touching something hot is necessary so they learn to do. In this case. give a small piece. if they insist on taking the whole thing and shoving it in. while you stand there let them when they cant swallow and have to dump it. and then you say no more. They will learn. I have 3 kids. They all learned lessons similarly.
