Strawberries, again

I had the oddest feeling this past weekend of being Tom Sawyer.
My youngest and two of her girlfriends went strawberry picking Saturday, then came back and cleaned what appeared to be 20 pounds of berries, laughing and working in concert.
I mixed up a batch of shortcake dough and let the girls do the kneading, rolling, cutting and baking (and eating). The one lone teen holdout for the evening helped my youngest smash berries, boil berries, measure pectin and sugar, skim jam foam and pour the hot mixture into jars. They made two batches of jam while I made pie crust for dessert, then made the filling for me so all I had to do was put cleaned berries in a baked shell.
All the work—and done by 16-year-olds. It was almost as if we had somehow conned them into doing the hard parts for us under the impression that it was a form of entertainment.
The payment: two jars of jam for each of the workers, not counting my youngest. And lots of smiles.

I think the girls enjoyed it a lot. And wow! A strawberry jam in a jar. I would love to have that too!
You know what goes great with strawberries? Pop’rs! Pop’rs are a unique seasoning that goes with just about any kind of food, from applesauce to yogurt, and comes in 8 different flavors. Are you going to teach them to whitewash fences next? I have to smile because I remember how cleverly Tom Sawyer got out of that job
